about

Speak your mind.

lyrics

I think that’s what we need more of,
people who find the strength to be themselves, no matter what.
At least for the people who can’t find that strength.

I wish I would’ve said something in my class
when they were talking about it as if it was a joke.

I have so much to say but I just cant.

I do not have the strength to speak up against him, I’m afraid of the repercussions.

Yeah speak my mind, I’m the creep up kind.
Kinda creepy how I read your mind.
I say what I will let a sheep go blind.
Let it sink in, in due time.

Yeah I had to say that, yeah I had to be so blunt
Sorry I offend you
When I live and be myself

I will tippy-toe away
I don’t know what I can say
Not much more that I can take
I ain’t livin’ in a cage

Cause hiding gets you nowhere but low down
and I broke down
and those broken pieces made me who I am now
and I talk loud

Why’d you have to say that
Why’d you have to speak your mind
Talk about the real shit
Leave all the rest behind
Not everyone wants that
Not everyone knows
So baby better watch that
Mouth of yours

Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should wash my mouth out
with soap and I’ll shut up now

Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should wash my mouth out
with soap and I’ll shut up now

But I think I gotta say what’s on my mind
You’d rather stop the press than stop the truth from going blind
And if you wanna punish me for acting out of line
Better line up quick cause no one likes a woman with a spine
I’m trying to change the world, you tell me change my clothes
Goes to show you that’s just how the story goes
A lady knows don’t lose your temper stay composed
No one, no one wants a thorn without a rose

But don’t hold your breathe for me to hold my tongue
Cause girls just wanna have freedom over fun
And someone told me that we’re going’ in reverse
Hit me with the worst
If you take my rights, then I’ll just write a verse

Why’d you have to say that
Why’d you have to speak your mind
Talk about the real shit
Leave all the rest behind
Not everyone wants that
Not everyone knows
So baby better watch that
Mouth of yours

Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should wash my mouth out
with soap and I’ll shut up now

Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should watch my mouth
Maybe I should wash my mouth out
with soap and I’ll shut up now

I wish I would just step up for myself and be like you know what,
the way I look doesn’t say anything about the way I work

Whenever I’m online and I read so much hate on my religion
and Muslim’s in general, I just think to myself, you don’t know me
and you’ve already decided that you hate me

He looks back at me, points over his shoulder to this back room and said,
“You can eat back there”, and I had no idea what to say except “OK”.
I wish I had said “No”, I wish I had said “No I’m not gonna eat in the back”.

It’s hard when your friends say like “Oh, you’re a girl, dress like a girl”. Um,
clothes don’t have a gender, so what am I supposed to wear?

When accused of being a social justice warrior, I tell people
“It’s better to have a bleeding heart, than no heart”

My family might not look at me the same way
but saying my own opinion and being who I am is totally worth it

The weight that lifted off of my shoulders after I had told them was amazing.
I felt so much better than I ever had in my life. It still hurt,
but it was significantly better after I had spoken my mind

And in deep thought 'n' time
We can speak our mind
We’re destined for self-expression
Kelly from Destiny’s Child will tell ya
Oppression is depressin’ so listen
I can’t help but speak up
Cause shut up is just what teacher's said when I was beat up
So when I grew up I
Claimed to do what we should all do
Is say the truth even if nobody even likes you
Speak your mind

*THANK YOU to everyone who sent in audio clips of things you have spoken up for, or wish you had spoken up for. Every tape that was sent in was listened to and heard, and we wish we could have fit them all into the song. Let’s all continue to use our voices, to speak up for the oppressed, and stand up for what we believe is right. Love and Peace, Evan and Elise.
